Book Club

Our book club set up as part of this project meets once a month and provides those involved with the chance to meet up for some lively debate and discussions.  For this part of the project we are studying a variery of texts which look at the status of women in Ireland. The group will study a number of texts of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.  Later on in the project we will study titles by authors by the other participating countries.

To date we have read one fiction title, The Country Girls by Edna O'Brien. Her works revolve around the inner feelings of women and were banned in Ireland when they were first published.

We have also read a non-fiction title, How the Light Gets in by Mary McEvoy.  Mary McEvoy is a well-known actress and presenter in Ireland and in this book we learn about her struggle with depression and her difficult relationship with her mother.

Our next title will be Mary Robinson's Autobiography. Former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson is one of the most inspiring women of our age, having spent her life in pursuit of a fairer world. In her book Everybody matters, she reveals what lies behind the vision, strength and determination that has helped her to achieve so much for human rights around the globe.
