SUMMARY AND FINAL EVALUATION ABOUT THE READING CLUB SURVEY.

The books chosen are: From Italy: Passos Lleugers by Dacia Maraini (carried out by Magdalena); from Turkey: La Bastarda d’Istambul by Elif Shafak (carried out by Isabel); from Estonia: Purga by Sofi Oksanen (carried out by Maite); from Bulgaria Els Lladres del Cigne by Elizabeth Kostova (carried out by Margalida) and from Ireland: L’habitació by Emma Donoghue (carried out by Eva).

2 sessions of an hour each were carried out from each book. They took place during the last term in 2012 with an average attendance of 11 readers.

The survey was answered by 6-11 people, depending on the number of attendants to each session.

Evaluation criteria: we have considered positive results those ranging from 4 to 5, while those ranging from 3 to 1 are considered negative. We have reproduced the answers that we have considered more personal and significant. When there is not any answer we have labelled it as: NA

Did you like the readings? 1     2      3    4    5 :  the vast majority answered 4 - 5

Assessment: really positive.

Did you like the two sessions devoted to commenting the book? 1     2      3    4    5 :  the vast majority answered 4 - 5

Assessment: really positive.

The sessions have been:

Assessment: really positive, all answered between 4-5. None said they were boring.

Do you think readers have participated enough? 1   2    3   4   5 : the vast majority answered 4.

Assessment: positive, but it could have had more participation.

Did the reading help you to get to know the author a little?    1  2   3   4  5 : more  than half answered between 4-5

What about the author’s country? 1   2    3   4    5   In general they answered in a positive way.

Assessment: positive

Do you think that the two sessions are enough to know the novel? 1   2    3   4   5 : In general they answered that they had not been enough.

Assessment: not enough

How many sessions would you suggest? The vast majority would suggest 3- 4

Assessment: not enough

Would you read the whole novel or another book by the same author? 6 said yes.

Assessment: really positive.

Do you think the novel deals with gender issues? If so, where can you see this? Moret than half think so, the rest doesn’t answer. Here you have some of the answers:

Yes, I think so because it deals with lots of details that are about women (descriptions, etc)

Normally the man is considered chauvinistic

Sometimes it is, but there are other times that it could be a man, especially in the kitchen.

Assessment: good level of reflection.

Would you participate in another reading club next year? 1   2    3    4   5 : the vast majority said yes.

Assessment: really positive.

What would you change from the reading club?

Schedule: the vast majority said no.

Frequency: more than half said they would change it.

Readings: the vast majority agree.

Other: they need more time to read.

Assessment: half of them said they would like more time between the sessions to be able to read the books. However, all of them agree with the readings.

We have realised that in our evaluation sheets there were some questions missing that we understand that are important. One of them being: did the reading club help the group to be cohesionated and make friends?

In the same way, we could also have included: Did the reading club help you like reading?

In any case, in the last sessions the attendants said they wanted to continue talking about gender issues and they will enroll in the ICT course that will be carried out in February/ March 2013.
